Hiking With Kids
Lower Merion
This Project
At first glance, this website appears to be just another blog on the internet. But it's not. This website is the product of a Girl Scout Silver Award, and in-depth 50 hour service project that can be completed by Girl Scout Cadettes (middle schoolers). The project is supposed to sustainably impact at least 15 people. The goal of my project is to get more kids off the screens and out in nature by hiking, hopefully leading to a happier and healthier generation.
As a Girl Scout Cadette entering the 8th grade, I had wanted to complete a Silver Award for a while, but I couldn't think of an issue that mattered to me that I could do something about.
The inspiration came one day riding the bus to school in the morning. I saw that more than 75% of students were not talking with their friends or looking out the window; they were on their phones. I started to observe more throughout the day and it seemed that most of my peers spent any chance they could get on a device. I felt I had finally found an issue I cared about and could address through a Silver Award Project.
I also knew that most of my peers would not want to participate in any kind of program that I created, so I decided to target my project towards younger children. I hoped to establish a love of nature at their young age that would stay with them throughout their life and encourage them to get off the screens and go outside. By creating an online guide to hiking in my local area for parents, I hoped that kids would be getting outside in nature more than they had been previously.
Has my project been successful? I don't know yet. But I hope that at least a few families out there have a newfound passion for nature and hiking.
