Hiking With Kids
Lower Merion
Getting Started
Hiking is fun and easy, but there are some things to know before you go.
When hiking, its important to be prepared. Here are some things to take with you on the trail:
-
Water: Remember to stay hydrated!
-
Whistle: I would suggest having a whistle for each child. Teach your child to blow the whistle and stay put if they get lost.
-
Navigation tool: This could be a map, phone, compass, or GPS, important when on an unfamiliar trail.
-
First Aid: Depending on your needs, this could range from a few band-aids to a full kit with Ace-wraps and gauze.
-
Toilet Paper: Most people don't include this on their lists, but it should be up there, especially with small kids.
-
Plastic Bags: For the toilet paper.
-
Appropriate shoes: Flip-flops are a no-no. Sturdy water shoes, sneakers, or boots are best.
-
Appropriate Clothing: If it's cold out, dress in layers. If it's hot, wear something suitable.
-
Flashlight: This is more relevant at late evening or night.
-
Sunscreen: In this area it is more relevant in the summer, but you want to avoid getting burnt, even in the shade of the forest.
-
Bug Spray: It helps keep the mosquitoes and ticks away.
These are some suggestions, but here is a link to the REI ten essentials page:

There are some unwritten rules and etiquette on the trail to keep yourself, others, and the wildlife happy and safe.
-
Stay on the trail: Going off trail can cause erosion, uproot plants, and destroy animal habitat. It also creates a lot of work for park managers and volunteers.
-
Do not disturb wildlife: It might be really tempting to pick up that snake, but just as we need our space the animals need theirs.
-
Leave no trace: The saying is, "Take only pictures, leave only footprints." Don't take rocks or leaves out of the woods, and don't leave your litter. It's also nice to pick up other people's litter, whether they accidentally drop it or don't care where it ends up.
-
Be aware of technology use: You are out to be in nature and to have fun, you don't need technology to do that. Try to be courteous to others, and don't blast music, push people out of the way for a picture, or make a really loud phone call.
-
Have Fun! That's what you came out to do, isn't it?
